Shopping for short-term household insurance can be confusing. Everyone wants the best coverage for the best price but sometimes, in our efforts to keep the cost down on this grudge purchase, we overlook important elements of the contract. If you follow these tips you will save some headaches down the road.
Select a strong insurer
Always ask about the company’s record. When losses occur, fast and fair claims service is a must with homeowners' insurance. The best way to find a good company is a simple referral from a friend who has received efficient service from their agent or broker.
Don't guess at your coverage
The cost of rebuilding your home might exceed your estimate. Consult a home assessor and determine how much you need to rebuild from the ground up.
Don't under-insure your possessions
Saving a few rands up front could cost you a significant amount of money at the time of loss.
Consider replacement value
Unless you insure for replacement cost of household possessions, you will be paid only the purchase price, less depreciation, for items that were destroyed in a fire or stolen.
Choose an appropriate deductible
The higher the amount of a property loss you elect to "self-insure," the lower your premium is likely to be.
Document valuable items
Items such as art, furs, antiques and collectibles all have coverage limitations on a policy. Make sure you have the appropriate coverage and double-check with your agent.
Ask about "off premises" coverage
Don't take a chance with expensive equipment. Make sure your insurance covers possessions in transit.
Make sure you get proper "credits"
Many policies offer discounts if you take extra precautions. Always check for the discounts offered.
Consider some costs
If you are careful, take a few risks on some items that cost a lot to insure (like bicycles and cameras). Find out how much you might save by leaving them out of your policy and become a little more vigilant.
Don't buy cheap
If you get three quotes and one company offers you a policy for R300 per month, another offers a premium of R500 the the last one quotes R700, you should question the lowest quote. You will find that there are many more exclusions on the cheaper quote and you may not get the protection you need. You will find that most reputable companies will quote similar prices.
